Busking Festival strikes all the right notes

Clonmel once again proved what can be achieved when music, community and a great atmosphere come together, as the Clonmel Busking Festival brought performers, musicians and music lovers onto the streets for a memorable weekend of entertainment.

Now firmly established as one of the highlights of Clonmel’s summer calendar, the festival has grown into an event that showcases an incredible range of musical talent while creating a unique atmosphere throughout the town.

From the streets and squares to the local pubs and venues, music could be heard throughout Clonmel, with performers entertaining crowds from morning into the evening. The festival has become about much more than simply listening to music — it is about the atmosphere, the unexpected performances, meeting friends and neighbours, and seeing the town at its very best.

A major highlight of this year’s festival was the annual Busking Competition, which once again attracted musicians eager to compete and showcase their talents.

This year’s winners were Stardog, a talented band who made the journey all the way from Cork to Clonmel to take part in the competition. Their journey proved well worthwhile as they impressed the judges and crowds with their performance.

As winners of the competition, Stardog were given the fantastic opportunity to perform a song to the crowds on the festival’s main stage at the Plaza. For the band, it was a wonderful chance to showcase their talent to a much larger audience and to experience performing on a bigger stage in front of the festival crowd.

The success of Stardog is also a wonderful reflection of what the Busking Festival has become. It is no longer simply a local event; it has developed a reputation that attracts talented performers from outside the town who are keen to experience the Clonmel festival and compete alongside musicians from the local area.

A Festival Built on Local Support
An event of this scale cannot happen without tremendous support from the local community, and the organisers would like to acknowledge the people and businesses whose backing makes the festival possible.

In particular, the financial support from Sureprint, Maher Plant Hire and Jamie O’Keeffe, along with the tremendous support of the local publicans, is absolutely vital to the future of the festival.

Their generosity and commitment are what help make it possible to continue staging the Busking Festival as a free event for the public. Without this support, the festival could not continue in its current form, nor could it continue to grow and attract the calibre of performers and audiences that Clonmel now enjoys.
The local publicans also play a hugely important role in the festival, providing venues and supporting the programme throughout the weekend. Their involvement helps extend the festival beyond the main outdoor stages and ensures that the music continues throughout the town.

The organisers are extremely grateful to all of these supporters. Their backing is not simply sponsorship — it is an investment in Clonmel, in live music and in an event that brings people together and attracts visitors into the town.

The festival is also fortunate to receive financial support from Tipperary County Council, which is an important part of helping the event take place each year. The combination of council funding, local sponsorship, the support of the publicans, volunteers and the wider community allows the festival to remain free and accessible to everyone.

A special word of thanks must also go to Liam Condon, whose tireless efforts in bringing the festival’s musical programme together are hugely appreciated. From liaising with artists and arranging performers to helping ensure that the music runs smoothly across the various venues and locations, Liam puts an enormous amount of time and energy into making the festival the success that it is.

His work, along with that of the wider organising team, volunteers, local businesses, venues and supporters, often happens away from the spotlight. Yet it is this dedication behind the scenes that allows the performers to take to the streets and the public to simply enjoy the music.

The festival also provides a fantastic opportunity for local musicians and emerging performers to perform in front of new audiences, while giving visitors the chance to discover some of the incredible talent that exists both locally and further afield.

One of the great strengths of the Clonmel Busking Festival is the way it transforms the town itself into a stage. Streets, plazas and public spaces become meeting points for music and entertainment, creating an atmosphere that is difficult to replicate anywhere else.

It is also an event that belongs to the whole community. Families, young people, older generations, visitors and local residents can all enjoy the festival, with something happening around almost every corner.
The continued success of the festival is a credit to everyone involved. It takes the commitment of organisers, musicians, volunteers, businesses and the wider community to create a weekend such as this, and Clonmel can be proud of what the festival has become.

The festival’s growing reputation is also evident in the distances performers are now travelling to take part, with musicians coming not only from across Tipperary but from Cork, Clare and Waterford, and further afield.

And while the music eventually fades from the streets, the memories remain — the packed crowds, the familiar faces, the new performers discovered for the first time, and the sound of music drifting through the town.

With talented musicians travelling from neighbouring counties to take part, and with the festival continuing to attract an ever-growing audience, the Clonmel Busking Festival is clearly something very special.

Once again, the Busking Festival has struck all the right notes.
