Michael Lowry TD has welcomed Ryanair’s announcement of a €50 million investment in a new aircraft maintenance hangar and Engineering Academy at Shannon Airport, a project expected to create 400 jobs.
Deputy Lowry said the announcement is a major vote of confidence in Shannon Airport and in the highly skilled workforce across the Mid-West. He said the investment will be particularly welcomed in North Tipperary, where many people travel to Shannon Airport each day to work in aviation and related industries.
He said the new Engineering Academy will provide young people across the region with access to skilled, well-paid careers in aviation engineering, while further strengthening Shannon’s position as one of Ireland’s leading aviation hubs.
Deputy Lowry said Ryanair’s continued commitment to Shannon demonstrates the airport’s enormous potential when it receives the support and investment it deserves. Following the decision to base a fourth aircraft at Shannon last year, the airline is now significantly expanding its engineering and maintenance operations.
He said Shannon has been undervalued for too long, and this latest announcement is further evidence of the airport’s ability to drive employment, improve connectivity and support economic growth across the Mid-West, with positive knock-on benefits for North Tipperary and the wider region.
Deputy Lowry said he will continue to press for sustained Government support to ensure Shannon Airport can realise its full potential and continue to deliver high-quality jobs and investment for the region.
