There was a wonderful sense of celebration, mixed with heartfelt emotion, in the closing days of the school year at Scoil Angela, Ursuline Primary School, Thurles, as long-serving Principal BrĂdann Molony brought an extraordinary chapter in her career to a close and embarked on a well-earned retirement.
While the excitement of the summer holidays filled the school, it was accompanied by the realisation that one of Scoil Angelaâs most cherished figures was saying farewell. There were many poignant moments throughout the day, but above all, there was an overwhelming sense of gratitude and admiration for the remarkable contribution BrĂdann has made to education, not only within Scoil Angela but across the wider Thurles parish.
Deputy Principal Helen OâDwyer led the celebrations, which followed a beautiful Mass of Thanksgiving in the Cathedral of the Assumption, concelebrated by school chaplain Rev. Fr. James Purcell PP and Fr. Vincent Stapleton CC. Students, staff, family, friends and invited guests gathered to honour a woman whose dedication, compassion and outstanding leadership have shaped generations of young lives.
Paying tribute to BrĂdannâs remarkable 34 years of service at Scoil Angela, including 28 years as Principal, Ms OâDwyer reflected on a career defined by commitment, kindness and an unwavering belief in the potential of every child. Having served as both teacher and Principal, BrĂdann leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire the school community for years to come.
âBrĂdann, today we celebrate your retirement and honour you for your dedication and service over the past 34 years in Scoil Angela, 28 of those years as our Principal. You have guided us with wisdom, care and generosity, and now it is your time.
âPut yourself first, enjoy precious time with your family and embrace all that retirement has to offer. While we are deeply saddened to say goodbye, we are delighted to see you begin this exciting new chapter, knowing how richly deserved it is,â Ms OâDwyer said.
A highlight of the celebrations was a delightful âReeling in the Yearsâ presentation, lovingly created by pupils and staff. From BrĂdannâs early days in Presentation Primary School, to her teacher training at St Patrickâs College, Drumcondra, her family life and the many memorable milestones throughout her career, the story of her life was brought vividly to life with humour, creativity and heartfelt affection.
It was a fitting tribute to a lady whose influence has touched countless pupils, families and colleagues over more than three decades. The school choir, under the direction of Ms Cathy Keane, delivered a beautiful musical performance, while the Thurles Community Orchestra added a special flourish to what was a truly memorable occasion.
In her response, BrĂdann expressed her sincere thanks to everyone who had supported and encouraged her throughout her career. She reminded those gathered that the pupils had always been the true stars of Scoil Angela and the reason she had loved every day of her work. The school, she said, would forever hold a very special place in her heart, and she looked forward to returning to celebrate many future occasions with the school community she holds so dear.
Education has evolved greatly over the years, and BrĂdannâs retirement marks the end of another significant era in the life of Scoil Angela. Yet her legacy will endure in the values she championed, the lives she influenced and the vibrant school community she helped to nurture. Great school leaders are only ever custodians for a time, but the impact they leave behind continues to inspire long after they have stepped away. BrĂdann Molonyâs contribution is one that will be remembered with deep gratitude and celebrated for many years to come.
